The Bible contains many passages about gemstones, and they carry profound symbolic meaning. The people of the biblical world knew perfectly well what each stone looked like: the color and qualities of a ruby, the shimmering beauty of jasper. These precious stones formed a kind of vocabulary—a secret language woven into Scripture.

After all, the New Jerusalem is said to be built of precious stones. But does this necessarily mean a physical city? Not entirely. In Scripture, Jerusalem can also be understood as a symbol of the human soul—the most precious, most intimate place where God encounters the human person. Isaiah, too, speaks of the soul as though it were a city surrounded by walls.

Rebuilt with precious stones

And guess what? In the Isaiah’s prophecy, he promises that those walls of Jerusalem will be rebuilt with precious stones.

What does this mean?

If you have experienced many tears, suffering, and sorrow in your life, if you feel shattered and defeated, Isaiah is speaking directly to you: there is hope.

God—your God—sees you and speaks directly to your heart.

You will be rebuilt. Forever.

Not carelessly and not as something fragile or second-rate. But you will be rebuilt even more beautifully than before—with precious stones.

O storm-tossed one, afflicted and without comfort…
